Hikifuda are advertising flyers created during the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods to advertise stores, wholesalers, brokers, manufacturers, and distributors. They are not only used as historical materials for advertising, but also have value as works of art due to their unique colors and bold designs, making them the subject of collection, and are held in museums around the country, as well as exhibitions. Early Hikifuda had one or two colors, but brightly colored Hikifudas were created during the decline of ukiyo-e, and as commercial activity flourished with civilization and enlightenment, Japanese woodblocks, lithographs, copperplates. These are printed materials such as store flyers, insert advertisements, wanted flyers, prizes, and supplements that were produced in large quantities with the development of letterpress printing. They were used not only to advertise products, but also to celebrate store openings and renovations, hand out items to customers, and hand out items on the streets. It was the last general printed material with a handmade feel, second only to ukiyo-e, and was the origin of modern advertising, as well as the forerunner of catchphrases. Nowadays, it is treated as a work of art, and is also valuable as a historical document of the time. In addition to the clothing, food, shelter, daily necessities, and industry that the stores sold at the time, you can also see historical materials such as the first telephones, telephone poles, automobiles, trains, and airplanes depicted in paintings. For example, cigarette brands include Shikishima, Yamato, Yamazakura, Star, Cherry, and Hero. It spread not only to the metropolitan areas of the time, such as Edo-Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, but also throughout the country. They come in a variety of sizes, some smaller than Ukiyo-e, and some larger. They were also pasted on the walls of houses, sliding doors, and public baths. (Wikipedia) Stock Code: 240814beni

https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/歌川広重_(3代目) Hiroshige Utagawa III (Tenpo 13 (1842) [1] - March 28, 1894) was an ukiyo-e artist from the Edo period to the Meiji period. A disciple of the first generation Utagawa Hiroshige. Like the first and second generations, Hiroshige's third generation is known to the world for his depiction of the ``Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido'', which reflects the Meiji era, and was filled with the rush of civilization and enlightenment. He actively depicts industrial products, steam locomotives, steamships, railroads, Western-style architecture, clothes, people with chopped heads, rickshaws, etc. ...The third generation Hiroshige depicted the state of civilization and enlightenment using a lot of poisonous imported aniline red, so his enlightenment paintings were called ``red pictures (Aka-e)''. It can be said that it perfectly reflected the restless and noisy social situation of the time. Although the third generation Hiroshige's Kaika-e paintings have nothing to do with the lyricism that the first generation Hiroshige had, they do well convey the colorful atmosphere of the early Meiji era. 上野暮雪 国貞 Kunisada - Evening Snowfall in Ueno(浮世絵 Ukiyoe)

Umbrellas are a very important motif for Beautiful Women of Ukiyo-e (Japanese Woodblock Prints). Utagawa Kunisada (Japanese: 歌川 国貞; 1786 – 12 January 1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (三代 歌川 豊国, Sandai Otagawa Toyokuni), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. He is considered the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. At the end of the Edo period (1603–1867), Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi and Kunisada were the three best representatives of the Japanese color woodcut in Edo (capital city of Japan, now Tokyo). However, among European and American collectors of Japanese prints, beginning in the late 19th and early 20th century, all three of these artists were actually regarded as rather inferior to the greats of classical ukiyo-e, and therefore as having contributed considerably to the downfall of their art. For this reason, some referred to their works as "decadent". Beginning in the 1930s and 1970s, respectively, the works of Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi were submitted to a re-evaluation, and these two are now counted among the masters of their art. Thus, from Kunisada alone was withheld, for a long time, the acknowledgment which is due to him. With a few exceptions, such as actor portraits (yakusha-e) and portraits of beautiful women (bijin-ga), at the beginning of his career, and some series of large-size actor head-portraits near the end, it was thought that he had produced only inferior works. It was not until the early 1990s, with the appearance of Jan van Doesburg's overview of the artistic development of Kunisada, and Sebastian Izzard's extensive study of his work, that this picture began to change, with Kunisada more clearly revealed as one of the "giants" of the Japanese print that he was…… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunisada Stock Code: 240420To

花模様 寛永正保頃 Floral pattern; Kan-ei~Shoho Era 清親 Kiyochika 明治29年(1896) 三枚続 Triptych 375x250mm Woodblock print, very good condition. Kobayashi Kiyochika (小林 清親, 10 September 1847 – 28 November 1915) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, best known for his colour woodblock prints and newspaper illustrations. His work documents the rapid modernization and Westernization Japan underwent during the Meiji period (1868–1912) and employs a sense of light and shade called kōsen-ga [ja] inspired by Western art techniques. His work first found an audience in the 1870s with prints of red-brick buildings and trains that had proliferated after the Meiji Restoration; his prints of the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95 were also popular. Woodblock printing fell out of favour during this period, and many collectors[who?] consider Kobayashi's work the last significant example of ukiyo-e.........
